Dining Room Table Sizing Guide

Your dining room table is a staple in your home! It's where you gather for big family dinners, your kids do their homework at night, it's where you host get-togethers with your family and friends and much more! If you find yourself hosting parties and family gatherings often, your dining room table at the Lake of the Ozarks is an important piece of furniture! If you've been considering upgrading your dining room table, you may be wondering what the best size and table shape is for your new table, so today, our furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks has a dining room sizing guide for you!

Start With Size

Of course, when it comes to table size, the existing space that you have to work with plays a big part in the size of the table your current space can support. Whether you've got a dedicated dining room or your table goes in the kitchen, you'll want to keep the space you have in mind. Check out what Bassett Furniture has to say about dining room size dimensions:

Around your table you’ll want to allow ample space:

Minimum: 36”
Ideal: 42-48”
For an entrance or thoroughfare: 48”
For place settings: 28-30”
For place settings and serving pieces: 36”
To pass across the table: Max 48”
For seating capacity: 24”

Rectangular tables are typically 36" to 40" wide. Tables that seat four should be about 48" long. Tables that seat four to six people should be at least 60" long. Tables that seat six to eight people should be at least 78" long.

Move onto Shape

When choosing the right shape for your dining room table, you should consider what look you are going for as well as how much space you have. Below is a breakdown of a few shapes to consider.

Rectangle

One of the most popular or traditional choices is a rectangle table. This table shape works great for big get-togethers and family gatherings. You typically have more flexible seating at a rectangle table.

Round

Round dining room tables work great in smaller spaces and allow for natural flow in your space. Round tables are great if you are trying to create an intimate setting. You won't have as much seating at a round table, typically, but this style works great for conversations.

Square

If you are dealing with a smaller space or looking for something more casual, a square dining room table works well. If you want to host gatherings occasionally choose a square table that comes with a leaf. Then, you transition to a larger table when you have guests over. A square table is a perfect choice for going from casual to more formal.

Now that you have a better idea on how to choose the right size table it's time to get out your tape measure, decide what size table you need and then come into Eldon Furniture and pick out the brand new table!
