4 Common Decorating Mistakes

Whether you're moving into a new home or you're simply looking to refresh your home, sometimes knowing the rules for decoration can be overwhelming. Although you are free to decorate your home with your own personal style, avoiding a few common mistakes can make you look like a pro home designer. To make things easy, your favorite furniture company at the Lake of the Ozarks has put together four common decorating mistakes.

Artwork and Picture Frames Hung Too High

There are exceptions to this rule but as a general rule of thumb, most interior designers will tell you to hang your wall art at the eye level of an average woman which is 5'6." If you are trying to create a gallery wall and you're not sure where to start, a great way to decide without putting any holes in your wall is to cut out pieces of paper in the sizes of your frames or artwork and tape them to the wall. This will allow you to arrange them several ways before committing your placement with a nail.

Too Many Accessories

Clutter is not a good look in your home and even if you keep your home picked up and tidy if you decorate your home with too many accessories your home will still feel cluttered. Remember, you don't have to keep the same accessories out all year long. Keep it minimal and just swap out things periodically throughout the year.

Not Hanging You Window Treatments Correctly

This is a classic mistake people make in their home. You may think that hanging up a curtain rod is an easy task but you need to take time to properly measure. If installed correctly, window treatments can make your space feel bigger than it is. For a dramatic look, hang your window treatments closer to the ceiling rather than hanging them level with the trim.

Your Area Rug is Too Small

This is a very common mistake people make. Sure, you may be trying to save a few dollars by going with a smaller rug but if you don't get the proper size, you're better off to just skip the rug altogether. In general, to buy the correct size rug, all of your main furniture should be able to touch the rug. When you are investing in a rug it's important to measure to make sure you purchase the right size. If you are indecisive about size, a good way to know for sure which rug to get is to get out some painters tape and actually tape down a few rug sizes. From there, you will have a nice visual of how big your rug will be so when you purchase your rug there will be no surprises when you get it home.
