How to Buy the Correct Size Area Rug
Have you ever purchased an area rug only to bring it home and realize it just doesn't look quite right in your space? This is very easy to do and knowing which size you need can be challenging. You don’t want your rug to be too small for the space but you also don’t want it to take up too much room — so how do you decide? Today, our furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks has some tips for buying the correct size area rug.
Dining Room
The size of your dining room rug depends solely on the size of your table. As a rule of thumb, when you choose a dining room rug, you should have at least 24 inches on all sides of the table. This will allow for your chairs to sit completely on the rug. The key to dining room rugs is the entire table and all chairs should sit on the rug and still have enough room for you to pull out your chair. If you get a rug that is too short, you won't be able to easily pull your chairs in and out and you risk someone tripping.Living Room
If you have a large and spacious living room where your furniture is not crowded, an 8X10 or 9X12 rug works great! This would allow you to create a seating arrangement that is completely on the rug. If your living room is on the smaller side, choose a rug that slightly smaller. In this scenario, instead of placing the furniture completely on the rug, just put the front legs of your furniture on the rug. This will help to keep your rug in place and also offer a cozy feel to your living room.Bedroom
There are a couple of different ways to accommodate a rug in your bedroom. Some like a rug under their bed and some choose small rugs that go on either side. When you choose to put a rug under your bed, another option is to get a rug big enough to also put your nightstands on. Some people prefer to only have the rug on the bottom half of the bed leaving the nightstands on the floor and the extra rug space on the front of the bed. Here is a general sizing guide for a bedroom rug:- 9X12 area rugs work great for a queen or king bed. You could also have two twin beds and their nightstands fit nicely on a 9X12 rug
- 8x10 area rugs work great for king and queen beds and will allow you to also have your nightstands on the rug as well.
- 6X9 area rugs are perfect for a twin or full beds and nightstand.
We hope you found this guide helpful for the next time you purchase an area rug. Area rugs have a way of pulling everything in the room together and adding a nice design element to your home.
