King vs. California King Bed What's the Difference?

 Are you thinking about finally taking the plunge and upgraded to a bigger mattress?  We are quite certain you won't regret going from a full or queen up to a king mattress! If you are looking to add more room for sleeping, you may be considering a king mattress or a California king mattress. We find that there is some confusion between the two sizes and today, Eldon Furniture would like to share with you the difference between the two! 


Some people are under the impression that there is really no difference between a king and a Califonia king mattress. There really is a difference in the size but it might not be what you expect. Most people assume that the word "California" means that the mattress is larger. While this is true, a California king is longer than a regular king mattress but the width is smaller. 

Dimension Breakdown 

King Bed 

A standard king bed typically measures 80 inches long by 76 inches wide. 

California King Bed 

A standard California king bed typically measures 84 inches long and 72 inches wide. 

Which is Best? 

Deciding on which mattress size really depends on your sleeping preferences. If you or your partner are taller than six-foot, you may really enjoy having those few extra inches so your feet don't hang off the bed. However, if you or your partner are not particularly tall, a California king may not be necessary. If you move around a lot in your sleep, you may prefer having the extra width. Either way, if you're going from a queen mattress to a king or California king you will have much more room and be comfortable. 

Don't Forget to Adjust Your Bedding! 

If you opt for the California king, you will want to make sure to adjust which sheets you buy. The difference in dimension will affect how your sheets and comforters fit.
