Add More Restful Sleep to your New Year's Resolution List!

It's the New Year and many of us start making our new years resolutions! Most new years resolutions revolve around some kind of productivity in your life. With that in mind, in order for us to bring our productivity level up, getting enough restful sleep is important! Therefore, we think you should add restful sleep to your New Year's Resolution!

When it comes to getting restful sleep, you should start by taking a look at your mattress! An old mattress that is uncomfortable could be the cause of lack of sleep. A new mattress may be in order. Not sure how to choose a mattress? Read on to get a few tips from Eldon Furniture!

1. Custom Fit

First, you’ll need to identify the sleep style you have. Do you sleep on your back, side, stomach, or a mixture of each? This is important to consider because it will determine the ideal firmness that your mattress should be. Back sleepers will typically want a mildly firm mattress, somewhere between 5-7 (on a scale of 10). This provides enough support for the spine to eliminate back pains. Memory foam being the pinnacle due to its ability to contour the spine while keeping adequate form and support.

Side sleepers are best suited with a softer mattress, typically between 3-6, which would be considered a medium soft. This type of mattress provides equal distribution of pressure which will alleviate hip and shoulder pains.

Stomach sleepers will also want to investigate the 5-7 range, like the back sleepers. This is because your torso will be applying most of the pressure to the mattress. So, if your mattress is lacking support you will experience back pains due to the way your spine curves during sleep.

2. Ideal Material

While most people tend to choose material based on their personal preferences, it is an important item to factor in your mattress buying decision. It can have effects on the support, cost, and overall sleep-appeal of the mattress. Traditionally, innerspring (coils) were the go-to mattress, however, with advancements in the sleep industry they are becoming obsolete. There are still some good qualities about them like affordability, durability, and a cooler night’s sleep – due to the air circulation between the springs.

Latex mattresses come in two varieties, natural and synthetic. Natural being the healthiest and, most costly option. Latex is a great fit for people seeking a cool, responsive mattress with options for health and budget managing.

Memory foam is one of the most popular materials available. The reason being, the material is form-fitting which contours to the shape of the individual. This offers motion isolation, which is fantastic for sleeping with a partner. One drawback of the memory foam is that it retains heat. Those looking for a cooler sleep may want to consider one of the many other options.

Hybrid options are also available, so if you like the idea of the memory foam but not the heat retention, this may be the best of both worlds. This product balances the best of support and cooling by utilizing memory foam, comfort foam, felt padding and coils. Hybrid options are notably one of the most expensive options.

Adjustable mattresses have an interesting array of capabilities and uses. The key ones being their ability to change the sleeping position. This is best suited for people with unique medical needs or conditions – such as snoring or chronic pains.

Pillow-Top mattresses are like latex, coil and memory foam beds but have an added layer of soft material embedded to enhance the comfort for the user. These beds are typically considered a more luxurious option and have a higher price-tag than some standard mattress options.

Lastly, we have the waterbed. These types of mattresses are best suited for people with allergies, chronic back pain, arthritis, or someone seeking to break away from the conventional mattress.

3. Budget

Buying a mattress can be best thought of as an investment in your sleep. One of the key items in any investment is the budget.  Research the cost of your ideal mattress to know how much budget you’re up against. There are financing options available if that is a better budget solution for your unique situation.
