5 Home Décor Tips to Maximize Your Space

With a little strategy and a few tips and tricks, anyone can make a smaller space feel bigger.  It can actually be a lot of fun figuring out how to maximize the size of a small area and make it look great at the same time! At our Eldon, MO furniture company, we know there are definitely some things you can do to make the room you are decorating feel more spacious. From the artwork you choose and how you hang it, to the style and functionality of your furniture, there are all kinds of tricks that can make the room feel bigger. If you’d like to learn how to get the most out of a smaller space, we have 5 helpful tips for you in this blog.

1. Bigger But Less

It might seem counterintuitive, but having bigger, but fewer, furnishings can make the space feel larger. Having small furniture, or lots of pieces, can have the opposite effect and make the space feel cluttered and less roomy.

2. Light and Bright

Creating a lighter, brighter atmosphere will also help make your space seem more open.  Lighter colored paint, even all white, will both brighten the room and reflect more light. If there’s not a lot of natural light, add light fixtures or tall lamps.

3. Larger Art, Placed Higher

In a smaller space, it can also be better to choose larger artwork. Similar to larger furnishings, the larger artwork will help the space feel bigger in comparison to a lot of smaller pictures in the same area. Another tip is to hang the artwork higher than eye level to draw the eye upward and give the feeling of more height in the room. Then utilize more vertical space with taller bookshelves and dressers. Mounting your TV is another way to free up floor space and draw the eye upward.

4. Reflect Your Style

Mirrors are also a great way to give the illusion of depth in a room. Smaller spaces definitely benefit from well-placed mirrors. You can use them to add more personal style and even help show off your other decor and reflect more of the light in the room at the same time.

5. Double Duty

Whenever possible, look for ways to have multi-functional spaces. A daybed that can function as a couch and a guest bed, a table that will work for dining and as a desk, maybe even a small desk and chair at the end of your bed instead of just a bench are examples. If you don’t have space for a full-size kitchen island, find a tall skinny table and scale it to the space you have.
